Strange Attractors Design (
www.strangeattractors.com
), designers of the animated introduction of the Experiences on the ‘frontpage’ of this VIDE website, will introduce you to the unlimited possibilities of time based design. You will discover all about or revise your thoughts on this intriguing and more and more prominent aspect of visual communication.
In the first week we will take a closer look at all the different aspects involved in motion graphic design. What are the differences between, and the benefits of print and motion? We will focus on narrative, story-boarding, image making, animation, typography, and of course the possibilities of sound. Because, as graphic designers, we are serving an audience, we'll also look into all different ways to get the most out of presenting your graphics.
In the final week of this experience we'll work in small groups towards a final motion piece which will be presented to a large audience in a very extraordinary way. Please check this site regularly, and we will keep you posted on the latest developments regarding this matter.
During the course, our Headquarters will be in The Hague, a city full of different nationalities, as well as the hometown of the Dutch Queen. Thanks to great public transportation and the Dutch railroads, we are only 50 minutes away from Amsterdam, 40 minutes from Utrecht, and 20 minutes from the centre of Rotterdam. In the meantime, your well equipped studio will be located at VIDE, right in the centre of The Hague, surrounded by more renown design agencies of various disciplines. Powerful computers and equipment, as well as the latest software will be available to make this experience a guaranteed success.
Because of The Hague's central location we'll be able to visit all places of importance to design in motion (and in general) in The Netherlands, (you might even get a glimpse of what’s behind that ‘Dutch Design’...) but the program also includes a five-day excursion to London as this wonderful city accommodates some of the most influential broadcasting stations and some leading motion graphics studios of the (past) decade. As we continue to fine tune this marvelous summer experience for you, we will reveal more and more information about the specifics.

Also, several activities will be carried out in cooperation with participants from VIDE’s other Summer Experience based on typeface design. This course will be provided by Donald Roos (
www.otherways.nl
) and is scheduled for the same period.
To give you an example, several designers have been asked to join Donald’s special cooking (and eating) sessions (unique opportunities to get to know the people behind the design and exchange experiences), and we, of course, are invited as well.
In other words, VIDE’s summer courses always combine knowledge and fun. After all, it is summertime…
that is why we call them EXPERIENCES!
So be there, in The Hague! From 3 until 21 July 2006. Sign up before 1 April 2006. No more than 16 participants per Experience. You can find more information about The Hague by visiting
www.denhaag.com
or
www.denhaag.nl
!
Should you sign up before 1 April do not book a hotel room instantly. We are looking for affordable yet good accommodation in The Hague. We will let you know once we have found something suitable.
Hello,
I was extremely interested in your program offer throughout the month of July
based around design in motion. I am currently finishing off a BA in
Communication Design at E.C. in V.
In my final semester I have been taking on the task of learning motion graphics and applying it to my final grad project. Throughout my training there has been
high emphasis on type and print design but very little on motion. I would like
to be able to further my studies through the aid of this course.
I am more than interested in finding out what it will take to enroll in this
fine summer program (or any programs with a similar topic of interest) and the
process required for acceptance. Thank you for you time.
K.M.
Strange Attractors
(The Hague, NL) is an international studio specializing in typography and brand communication for print, motion and interactive media. Since 2001 studio founders Ryan Pescatore Frisk (USA) and Catelijne van Middelkoop (NL) have collaborated with a range of cultural and commercial clients — including FontShop International, Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo Lab, City Centre Offices in Berlin and The Oratai SoundSalon in New York — to produce innovative and influential design solutions.
The design duo has given lectures and workshops worldwide and their work has been showcased in venues and publications around the globe including Print's Regional Design Annual, the Type Directors Club, The Dutch Design Prizes 2003, 2+3D, The 21st International Biennale of Graphic Design BRNO, ADC Young Guns 04, Dutch Type, ITEMS Magazine, The Foreign Affairs of Dutch Design and the Red Dot Award Communication Design 2005.

Simply put it is anything which is not static. You are surrounded by it everyday in movies, television, web, video games, interactive kiosks, cellphones, iPods, digital cameras...Design has a life outside of the printed page, and this is it!
As contemporary designers who look at the past as well as the future, we believe that it is important for each participant to gain a solid understanding of the possibilities of technology as a tool and medium.
We do not require any past experience with motion design, video or programming.
We do strongly advise prior experience with graphic design, design concepts and desktop publishing programs. (Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.)
The Summer Experiences are designed to adapt to your individual goals and needs. We're here to help YOU! Each participant gains firsthand knowledge and experience exploring Design in Motion.
Throughout the experience you will also have the opportunity to meet and learn from a number of special Dutch Design guests(!).
The first week will begin with an overview of design in motion. What are the differences between, and the benefits of print and motion?
We'll discuss principles and technology common to many modes of contemporary communication - from Main Title Animation, Broadcasting, Web and Interactive, to Installation and Digital/Hardware Interfaces. We will focus on narrative, story-boarding, image making, animation, typography, and of course the possibilities of sound.
For this Summer Experience we have designed a number of short individual projects which will introduce the participants to key methods of production and important design concepts, all while providing room for personal direction and growth.
In the final week we will work with each participant to produce a final motion piece.

is generally as below. When more specific information on it is available, including names of participating supervisors and studios to be visited on the excursions, we will adapt page content.
Make sure you visit this page on a regular basis.
