The real art of conversation is not only to say the right thing at the right time, but also to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting time.

Anno Fekkes, managing director of VIDE and coordinator at the Fontys Academyof Fine Arts and Education has won the HBO Innovation Prize 2009 together with his colleague Dorien Doornebos-Klarenbeek. The winning project was Expressive Economy Education Experiments . In this project Economy students at Fontys Lerarenopleiding Tilburg and students of the Fontys Academy of Fine Arts and Education (Visual Communication section) worked together on integrating study material and images into new, digital environments.

The prize awarded on Tuesday 21 April 2009 was presented during the annual conference of the HBO-raad (Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences)at the World Trade Centre in Rotterdam. The HBO Innovation Prize was awarded to a project that contributes significantly to refreshing and upgrading education and the professional practice. The prize was awarded for the fourth time this year. The winners received a knowledge voucher worth € 5,000 and a sculpture of Willem Noyons (see also www.noyons.com ).

The jury members said the following about the winning initiative: "From two entirely different disciplines a new initiative has been borne that is most intriguing. The combination of the Visual Communication study and the Economy Teacher Training course gave birth to an interactive programme that intensifies the participation of both students and their pupils. This project concerns more than one domain and may thus lead to a much better understanding of working in the educational world. It begins with and for students, new study material is developed, so it is innovative, internship teachers join in which leads to an incremental process. A process like this could well be transferred to others. If we wonder what to do with all of these narrow, trendy and artistic studies such as visual communication, well this here is the answer. Please continue and multiply this initiative.”
